Canucks, Sherwood and Garland

Canucks Trade Talk Heats Up

Speculation regarding which veteran Vancouver Canucks player or players might get traded in the coming days heated up over the weekend.

Pending unrestricted free agent winger Kiefer Sherwood’s name has popped up in a number of markets including Boston, where hometown boy Conor Garland has also generated some interest.

A deal for the feisty, undersized forward would seem less likely since Garland has a new six-year contract kicking in next summer. Then again, his no trade clause also takes affect with the new deal.

According to Jimmy Murphy at RG Media in Boston, 100%, the Bruins have inquired about both players.

The Canucks have apparently indicated no one is off the table other than captain Quinn Hughes and goalie Thatcher Demko.

Interesting that center Elias Pettersson’s name wasn’t included with those two. Pundits who were early season naysayers regarding “Petey”, those who insisted the club should trade him if they could, might be having second thoughts since the 27-year-old Swede has found his game.

His departure would seem unlikely unless Vancouver management decides to “burn this thing to the ground” and start over. Pettersson would undoubtedly bring back a hefty return of prospects and picks, if so desired.

Tuesday night could prove to be a pivot point. If the Canucks get smoked by the first-overall Colorado Avalanche in their match-up in Denver, Canucks management might speed up the process.

A strong performance for Vancouver might only delay the inevitable, now that the Canucks “open to trades” cat is out of the bag.
