Goldeneyes 4, Torrent 3 — Overtime
Sure, the Vancouver Goldeneyes didn’t win their inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League game in regulation, giving up one of the potential three points in the standings to the visiting Seattle Torrent, but what they did do was create an unforgettable evening.
The Goldeneyes trailed by a single goal three different times, only to tie it three times, with their last tally in regulation coming with just 2:03 remaining on the clock.
That set up the game winner from Abby Boreen at 1:36 of overtime to send the capacity crowd at Pacific Coliseum into a frenzy.
A successful evening of entertainment to say the least, on the opening night of the PWHL season.
By the way, you read that right: In the PWHL, three points are up for grabs should a team win in regulation. If a team wins after regulation, they get two and the losing team gets one, similar to the NHL.
Unlike the NHL however, which awards a winner just two points regardless of when a team wins — their well know little trick to creating perpetual parity — the women’s league rewards a club for taking care of business in 60 minutes, just like in international leagues and tournaments.
It means the Goldeneyes are in 2nd place overall with two points after one night. The Toronto Septres are on top with three points, having beaten the two-time defending champion Minnesota Frost 2-1 in regulation.
The Goldeneyes play their next three games on the road starting on Wednesday night against the Ottawa Charge, followed by stops in Boston against the Fleet and New York against the Sirens.
The next home game for Vancouver is set for December 6th against New York. It’s a Saturday matinee.
