The Seattle Torrent beat the Toronto Sceptres 6-4 on Tuesday night at Climate Pledge Arena in what became the highest scoring game of this Professional Women’s Hockey League (WPHL) season. Ten goals in a match is one off the all time WPHL record.
What’s even more impressive, the teams drew 10,160 fans.
“Every single time we play at home it’s been incredible,” said Torrent forward Lexie Adzija after the game. “I’ve played for multiple organizations, and it’s different here. Our fans rally around us and even on weekdays, we have over 10,000 fans. As players, that makes this experience so special. We really wanted to get that win for them and I’m happy that we did.”
It wasn’t easy. The Sceptres jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first three minutes.
The Torrent battled back with two goals before the 1st period was over, including a power play marker from captain Hilary Knight to put Seattle on the board. At 4:21 of the second period, Julia Gosling put the Torrent in front for the first time.
The game was tied 3-3 entering the third period. That’s when Adzija scored a shorthanded goal to steal the momentum back for Seattle. Megan Carter scored what would be the game winner three minutes later.
“We didn’t have our A Game, but we found a way,” Torrent head coach Steve O’Rourke said postgame. “We had a power play goal, Lexie’s huge shorthanded goal, and we just found ways to grind it out. As we talked about before the game, we have a group of players that are led by two experienced Olympians who really don’t blink in the face of adversity, and the rest of them just follow along and don’t blink either, they just kept on pushing.”
Seattle improved to 4-and-2 on home ice and moved to within one point of the Sceptres for 6th place in the league. Seattle has played two fewer games than Toronto. Corrine Schroeder made 31 saves for the win.
Seattle’s next game will be part of the PWHL’s neutral site “Takeover Tour” when they take on the Vancouver Goldeneyes on Sunday in Denver.
