Senators 4, Kraken 3 — Shoot-out
Call them the worn out Senators. After losing the night before in Buffalo to the Sabres 8-4, the Ottawa Senators played with desperation in a fast paced tilt against the Seattle Kraken. They fell behind the visitors from the Emerald City twice, including early in the 3rd period, only to come back to tie the game late in regulation and win it 4-3 in a shoot-out.
Seattle’s Shane Wright opened the scoring in the 1st period by whacking home a third opportunity past Ottawa goalie Linus Ullmark at the 4:57 mark.
The Senators answered in a big way with two goals in less than two minutes before the midway point of the opening stanza, including one from the NHL’s leading goal scorer Shane Pinto. He ripped home a loose puck from the slot for his 6th of the season.
It was the Kraken’s turn to battle back. Chandler Stephenson tied the game early in the 2nd period and then gave his team the lead even earlier in the 3rd with a power play marker. It was his first two goals of the season.
The Sen’s seemed to lose their mojo and run out of gas after Seattle took that lead 3-2 just 2:15 into the final period.
At one point, the visitors outshot their hosts 16-2 during a stretch from late in the 2nd period well into the 3rd.
Unfortunately for a Kraken team in just their second game of a six-game road trip, Seattle gave up the game tying goal when Dylan Cozens scored with an extra attacker on the ice at the 18:14 mark.
Seattle dominated puck possession during the five-minute OT, including a remarkable stretch that saw them keep the puck and the offensive pressure on for more than two straight minutes. The Senators hit the post behind Philipp Grubauer in the closing seconds.
The shoot-out ended with Tim Stutzle and Pinto both scoring, while the Kraken failed to beat Ullmark.
Seattle outshot Ottawa 33-24 for the game and moved to 2-0-and-2 on the early season. They’re 0-0-and-2 in the first two games of their road trip.
