Silvertips Beat Saguenéens For 2nd Time
The dream season for the Everett Silvertips continued Friday, with a 6-1 Memorial Cup semifinal beatdown of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in Kelowna, BC.
Silvertips defenseman Landon DuPont celebrated his 17th birthday one day late by scoring two goals and being named the game’s number one star.
The victory earns WHL champion Everett the right to meet OHL champion Kitchener Rangers Sunday at 4 pm PT. The winner of that game gets to hoist the Memorial Cup, symbolic of supremacy in junior hockey. In the round-robin portion of the four-team tournament, Kitchener defeated Everett 6-2 on May 25.
The Silvertips are representing the Western Hockey League for the first time since the franchise joined the league in 2003. The ‘Tips earlier went 16-2 in four WHL playoff rounds to capture their first Ed Chynoweth Cup.
Kraken Prospect Scores Power Play Goal
Seattle Kraken prospect Julius Miettinen scored the final goal of Everett’s rout. Even though it was the 20-year-old center’s 15th postseason goal, he had been shut out in Everett’s first three Memorial Cup games.
That changed on the power play 45 seconds into the 3rd period. Miettinen squeezed a one-timer from the left circle between the goalie’s pad and the post.
After hitting the twine, the native of Helsinki reached behind him with his left hand, grabbed an imaginary object, and forcefully tossed it away – getting the monkey off his back.
The 6-foot-3, 207-pound center was a 2nd round Kraken draft pick in 2024. The Chicoutimi loss eliminated Seattle’s 3rd round selection in that draft, defenseman Alexis Bernier.
