Kraken Forward Immortalized Alongside Runway Model, Guinea Pig & Dachshunds

Where’s the last place you’d expect to see a Seattle Kraken photo? How about a worldwide news service feature titled, “The Week In Unusual Pictures.”

Reuters is a British news agency much like Associated Press, with journalists in 165 countries. For the week of October 8th, their editors selected nine images for their online “Unusual Pictures” gallery. Offerings included a model walking a Bangkok runway ahead of a humanoid robot, the world’s first wax doner kebab in Berlin, a guinea pig receiving a blessing in Ecuador, and the March of the Dachshunds in Paris.

In the middle of this menagerie, new Kraken forward Mackie Samoskevich. The occasion was Samoskevich being named 1st star for his two goals in Seattle’s home-opening win over the Calgary Flames. He’s shown about to yeet a salmon plushie into the Climate Pledge Arena stands. Wacky, huh?

Kraken Not Allowed To Play With Broken Stick, But Ref Can

If unusual images connected to the Kraken are your thing, how about this KHN screengrab from Friday’s win over the Red Wings. Which team is referee Michael Markovic playing for? An even better question, who does the ref think he’s playing for?

Kraken, Ref Stick
Referee Michael Markovic is open, but Jared McCann won’t pass to him.

Yeah, we know better – and so does Markovic, who’s actually performing a service. Officials often pick up broken sticks abandoned by players, so they don’t become a tripping hazard while play continues. Markovic, by the way, was a junior hockey teammate of Calgary’s Chris Tanev, brother of former Kraken Brandon Tanev.

One year ago, the visiting Florida Panthers thought they’d scored a goal at the New Jersey Devils’ home opener. Markovic, an NHL ref since 2019, looked into the camera, turned on his microphone, and said the following. “After review, the call on the ice stands, we have a goal… Oh, sorry! Excuse me! After review, there is… NO goal. Florida will be charged a bench minor penalty for delay of game.”

Well, we now know Michael, who played 13 ECHL games before switching to stripes, can deke.
