The club has placed the following players on waivers for the purpose of being reassigned to the Coachella Valley Firebirds:
J.R. Avon, John Hayden, Logan Morrison, Victor Ostman
Morrison is of particular interest given his perceived strength in camp and in the preseason games. He’s a 24-year-old undrafted center who tallied 29 goals for the Firebirds last season. He played in four NHL games three seasons ago. Seattle will learn Tuesday whether all four cleared waivers.
The Kraken have released the following players from their PTO (professional try-outs) and reassigned them to the Coachella Valley Firebirds:
Ian McKinnon, Gustav Olofsson, Mitchell Stephens
No surprises here. Olofsson has played in 63 NHL games, mostly with the Minnesota Wild, the team that drafted him in the 2nd round in 2013. He’s played four games with the Kraken.
These three defensemen were sent back to their junior clubs:
Finn Kearns (Sudbury Wolves in the OHL), Will Reynolds (Newfoundland Regiment in the QMJHL), and Rylan Singh (Guelph Storm, OHL)
The club released the following players from their rookie camp tryout: Forwards Brody Gillespie and Justin Janicke and goaltender Maks Corovic. Those are straight up cuts.
And here’s the big hunk, reassigned to Coachella Valley. Camp will continue for them at the American Hockey League level:
Alexis Bernier, Lukas Dragicevic, Ryden Evers, Jagger Firkus, David Goyette, Kaden Hammell, Tyson Jugnauth, Andrei Loshko, Julius Miettinen, Ty Nelson, Jani Nyman, Caden Price, Carson Rehkopf, Lleyton Roed, Eduard Sale, Nathan Villeneuve
Some of those players will obviously get a look at the NHL level later. They’re waiver exempt for now.
Defenseman Nelson scored two goals over the two preseason games.
Silvertips fans will follow Miettinen’s career closely. He’s just a kid right out of juniors and this was to be expected. We wrote recently about Firkus’s prospects.
The one surprise might be Nyman, but then again, the Kraken are crowded with middle-six wingers and he’s still figuring things out.
After a day off Monday, the club will continue training camp sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday before hosting the Calgary Flames on Thursday evening at Climate Pledge Arena. Fans will see a veteran-laden line-up, as they will again against the Canucks in Vancouver on Saturday afternoon.
