Kraken Vet Wishes He Could Say ‘I Do’ To More Golf

Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann has revealed one thing he’s done a lot of this summer. Also, how that thing has kept him from doing as much of another thing as he would have liked.

“I’m getting to that age now where everybody’s getting married,” McCann said on Toronto’s TSN 1050 radio. He’s attended “a lot of weddings. Philipp Grubauer got married in Italy. My wife and I went down there for that. A lot of German beer. Good stuff.”

The only downside to a nuptial-heavy calendar? Less time to golf. “I haven’t been able to play much this summer.”

For the record, Jared, who turned 30 in May, just celebrated his own 2nd wedding anniversary to wife Valerie.

Those ‘Chirps’ Aren’t Birdies Or Eagles

McCann reacquainted himself with the links in Toronto this week at the Zach Hyman Celebrity Classic, which supports children’s charities.

Other celebrities included Hyman’s most famous Edmonton Oilers teammates, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. McDavid has chirped Hyman in the past as the Oilers’ worst golfer. “We joke with him like, ‘Why do you even put on a golf tournament?’ He doesn’t play golf. He should put on a pickleball tournament.”

Chirps aside, Hyman’s annual golf tournament has raised more than $3 million since 2018.

Kraken Forward’s Toronto Layover

Back to McCann, his return to Toronto sparked memories of the technical 72 hours he was a Maple Leaf in the summer of 2021. He had ended the previous season as a Pittsburgh Penguin, and would start the next one as a charter member of the Kraken.

“It happened really quickly. I was at a buddy’s cottage when I got the phone call from the GM in Pittsburgh that I’d been traded to Toronto.

“(Maple Leafs GM) Kyle (Dubas) called me 15 minutes later. Just told me, ‘We’re going to figure out the expansion draft. We don’t know what’s going to happen yet.’ I went to Seattle pretty quickly.”

McCann joked that he’s “still waiting” for the arrival of his Maple Leafs jersey.

“It was a roller coaster (of emotions). My wife and I didn’t know where we were going to be. Obviously, Seattle is far from home. I heard from some people I hadn’t heard from in a long time when I got picked up by the Leafs. I think they were ready to get some tickets.”
