This pre-season’s NHL Prospects Showcase between the Seattle Kraken and Vancouver Canucks will take place in Abbotsford BC on September 12th and 13th.
Last year’s event was a rousing success with the two franchise’s splitting the games played at the Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett and the Kraken Community Iceplex (KCI).
A boisterous crowd on night one saw the Seattle prospects storm back to score four goals in the third period to win 5-3.
“I thought we were trying to be a little bit too cute (in the first 40 minutes), a little bit too much perimeter play,” Seattle prospect and Coachella Valley Firebirds AHL head coach Derek Laxdal said after the game.
2024 1st-round NHL Draft pick Berkly Catton led the way with a goal and an assist. Winger Jagger Firkus and defensemen Tyson Jugnauth and Blake Fiddler all added two helpers.
The evening was also notable because Canucks 2025 15th-overall draft pick Braeden Cootes left the game after two periods for ‘precautionary reasons’. The right-handed centerman ended up finishing his junior career with the Seattle Thunderbirds and Prince Albert Raiders before playing three games for the NHL Canucks.
On night two at KCI the Canucks youngsters evened up the set of games with a 3-2 victory. Vancouver 2022 1st-rounder Jonathan Lekkerimäki, righty centerman Riley Patterson, and undrafted former Vancouver Giants winger Aaron Obobaifo all lit the lamp.
This is year two of the multi-year event established by the neighboring NHL franchises.
Tickets for the first night go on sale August 10th.
