Sabres 3, Canucks 2
The Canucks sank deeper into the basement of the National Hockey League, now trailing everyone in the NHL by at least three points. They are clearly team number-32 in the standings.
It doesn’t really matter who they play. Thursday night it was their 1970 expansion brethren, the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo handed Vancouver its fourth loss in five games this month, and their eleventh loss in their last 14.
The Canucks outshot their opponent once again, this time 31-15, out-chanced them, but failed to sufficiently find the back of the net. The Sabres barely took just enough advantage of their opportunities.
Buffalo captain Rasmus Dahlin scored the opening goal of the game at the 7:36 mark of the first period. He’d later add an assist on big forward Tage Thompson’s 15th goal of the season, a snipe that tied the game midway through the second period after the Canucks had hopped ahead. Vancouver scored back-to-back on goals by Kiefer Sherwood on the power play and Max Sasson at even strength with a burst of speed to the net.
Zach Benson’s power play goal proved to be the difference at 14:46 of the 2nd period.
Defenceman Dahlin has ten points over his last five games at Rogers Arena. It was the first regulation road win of the season for Buffalo.
Vancouver goalie Thatcher Demko got the start, his first in a month, and took the loss. Alex Lyon won the game for Buffalo.
