Canucks, Miller and Hughes

Ex-Canucks: Miller Named Captain Of Rangers

Ex-Canucks

I often wondered if part of J.T. Miller’s overall issues in Vancouver included gradual fall-out from Quinn Hughes being named captain of the Canucks the season before. Unlikely considering the team went on to have a successful 2023-’24 season, but then again, these type of things can linger, especially for someone with a mental make-up like Miller’s.

In September of 2023, Hughes was still a bit of a shrinking violet publicly; softspoken, cliche’, and short when addressing the media. Hardly a personality that emanated leadership or authority.

Whatever impact or guidance he had or provided during tumultuous times early last season between his buddy Elias Pettersson and Miller, it obviously wasn’t enough. Miller sat out for a spell early on and then was shipped out three months later. It’s believed Hughes lobbied with the club for “Petey” and against Miller.

Now Miller’s the captain of the New York Rangers, which is exactly where and what he should be. The move was announced Tuesday morning.

As one might expect, there was no bullshit press release-style comment from, or provided for, Miller. Just the background facts.

Rangers president Chris Drury did have this to say: “Since his arrival last season, J.T. immediately became a leader for our group and exemplifies how we want to conduct ourselves both on and off the ice. Congratulations to J.T. and his entire family on an incredibly meaningful achievement and we’re confident he will continue to represent our organization with class, commitment, and integrity.”

When the Canucks visited the Rangers last March 22nd, seven weeks after he was dealt, the ex-Canucks forward shared his feelings on the ice after a whistle. (video) There was nary a response from anyone on the Vancouver club.

Miller went on to score an empty netter to wrap up a 5-3 Rangers win.

Meanwhile, Hughes sounds a lot more grown up these days, most recently addressing concerns about noise regarding his future with the Canucks. He’s not even eligible to sign until next summer.

“As far as the noise, I can handle the noise,” he said. “That’s why I’m the captain of the team, because I can handle these things and I can play at an elite level and it doesn’t matter what’s going on around me.”

Strong statement, adding to a sentiment about taking things one day at a time.

It appears both guys are where and what they should be. It’ll be fascinating to see how they handle being on Team USA together for the Winter Olympics, presuming Miller makes it.
