Seattle Kraken TV commentator Eddie Olczyk announced on Tuesday that he’s stepping down as TV analyst for the local hockey telecasts.
In a note on social media addressed to “Dear Kraken fans … “, Edzo said “It’s time for me to go back home and be there for me and my family.”
The 59-year-old former NHL player and coach famously beat stage-3 colon cancer back in 2018 and wrote a book about his experience in 2019. There’s no indication that his departure is health related; he does go on to refer to the fact that he’ll be doing NHL games as part of the TNT national package.
Part of his message was directed to his play-by-play partner John Forslund, when Olczyk said “There’s nobody better! Hopefully we’ll have the chance to call some national Kraken broadcasts together down the line.”
Forslund reponded in kind on Twitter/X; “Thank you Edzo!!! The best!”
His departure leaves a gaping hole in the booth in terms of expertise, experience and the entertainment factor. According to the club, there is no plans for a replacement at this point. J.T. Brown will continue his role as analyst.
The Kraken have been a family affair for the Olczyks. Current Utah Mammoth TV commentator Nick Olczyk, Eddie’s son, got his start with Seattle as a reporter/analyst with the expansion team. Eddie’s brother Ricky has been an assistant general manager with the club since day one.
