It won’t be easy, but it’s definitely within the realm of possibility. Kraken winger Jared McCann is seven points behind current Seattle scoring leader Jordan Eberle, who leads the club with 38.
McCann finished on top of the Kraken’s scoring chart in all four of the franchise’s previous seasons, with 50, 70, 62, and 61 points respectively.
A disclaimer: In the ultimate team sport, one doesn’t really win a team “scoring title”, he’s either the club’s “scoring leader” or he “finishes on top in team scoring”. It’s not a top priority for a player, nor should it be. It just happens or it doesn’t. Team wins is most important.
But it would be quite an accomplishment for the 29-year-old from Stratford, Ontario, considering he’s missed a slew of games due to lower body injury.
The Kraken have played 56 games this season. Eberle has 38 points while participating in 54 of those matches. That’s a points-per-game (PPG) rate of .70. McCann is essentially the only point-per-game performer this season with Seattle, having 31 points in 32 matches. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and just round up to 1.00 per game.
If both men play in the remaining 26 regular season tilts, at their current PPG, Eberle would add 18 points to his total and finish with 56. McCann would add 26 to his total and finish with 57. How about them apples!
(Oddly enough, for some, apples refers to assists. I never use that term, plus it doesn’t apply here. McCann will likely add more goals than assists to his totals. He presently has 16 G and 15 A)
McCann was on a roll heading into the Olympic break with a five-game point streak in which he posted nine points. That streak started with a two goal, two assist night against the Washington Capitals on January 27th.
Just a little curiosity satisfied for now. There’s no guarantee, but it would be fun if he finished on top for a 5th straight season. Here’s to good health.
