Saturday is a full day-off for the Seattle Kraken. They can use it.
Most of the players, if not all of them, will take this free day from training camp to attend the University of Washington football game. The hockey players will be introduced to the crowd during the 2nd quarter of the Huskies game against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
A couple of them might not be in attendance because of injury issues. The list of banged up Kraken is growing quickly.
Projected top-6 forward Kaapo Kakko went to see a specialist on Friday for his upper body injury suffered on Tuesday night in Calgary in the 4-1 loss to the Flames. It was discovered he has a broken hand and the team announced Saturday that the Finn will miss six weeks.
His potential linemate and the club’s all-time leading scorer Jared McCann has already missed an early portion of camp and is considered day-to-day with a lower body injury, very likely the recurrence of a problem that led to surgery this past off-season.
Key defenseman and potential member of Canada’s Olympic team, — just to give one an idea of his value — Brandon Montour, has been unavailable following ankle surgery. He’s expected back for the season opener, but will have no rep’s under new head coach Lane Lambert’s systems.
Not done yet.
Like Kakko, although less serious apparently, Kraken center Chandler Stephenson was also injured in Tuesday night’s game. He hasn’t played since. He’s day-to-day and his coach has been hush-hush on details.
We’ll see who’s back on the ice when training camp resumes on Sunday. Not the way this franchise wanted to start the 2025-’26 season.
