Seattle Kraken 2024 1st-round NHL Draft pick Berkly Catton, whose appearance in the Western Hockey League championship series we previewed almost two weeks ago, fell short with his Spokane Chiefs in a five-game loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers.
The series wrapped up with a 4-2 decision last Friday night.
Catton tallied at least one point in every game except Game-3, one that saw the Chiefs shut-out 6-0.
He finished the 2025 WHL playoffs with the most points overall, 42, one ahead of teammate Andrew Cristall, who won the league’s regular season scoring title.
The series was closer than it initially sounds. In fact, the Chiefs split the first two games played in Medicine Hat, with a convincing 6-2 win in Game-2. Spokane scored four goals in less than a five-minute span in the 1st period to run away with it. Catton finished the night with two goals and an assist.
Unfortunately for fans in western Washington, the Chiefs lost momentum and couldn’t figure out a victory in three games played on home ice.
The Tigers were led by projected 2026 1st-overall NHL Draft pick Gavin McKenna, who led his club in the postseason with 38 points and in the regular season with 129.
The Tigers are off to the Memorial Cup in Rimouski, Quebec starting in two days. They’ll battle the host team Oceanic, the Moncton Wildcats, champions of the Quebec League, and the Ontario Hockey League champion London Knights. It’s a round robin format for a chance to hoist a historical trophy and for North American major junior bragging rights.
The Chiefs are done for now. Catton can next be seen at Seattle Kraken Development Camp in late June and/or early July.
