The Canucks are now 1-11-and-1 over their last 13 games after Saturday evening’s 4-2 setback at the hands of the dreaded Toronto Maple Leafs. Dreaded because a percentage of Vancouver faithful, encouraged by some in the local sports media, hate Toronto simply for being Toronto. That would be the city, not the team.
Add that to the fact the season is over in terms of even flirting with a wild card spot, which might have been fun for shifts and giggles. Instead, it’s the season long quest of looking for “steady improvement from the young guys”.
“I have season tix and the price of tix have gone up, beer and food has gone up and the frustration of all their losses this year,” wrote one Canucks fan in response to one of our last stories here.
It’s ugly, especially when getting excited about potentially winning the draft lottery is still six months away.
On the bright side, Saturday’s game was competitive throughout until former Canucks forward Teddy Blueger put it away with an empty-net goal at 18:24 of the third period. Blueger also assisted on the game winner, scored by former Vancouver 4th-liner Zack MacEwen at 12:34 of the 2nd period.
For the Canucks, Brock Boeser scored his 5th goal of the season in the first period on the power play to tie the game at 1-1. His nifty move on a breakaway followed a long centre ice stretch pass from D-man Filip Hronek.
Max Sasson scored in the third period for his fourth tally of the season to make things interesting, cutting the Maple Leafs lead to 3-2 at 9:27. The comeback fell short.
Vancouver hosts the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.
