Canucks Preseason Profile
Tyler Myers
35-year-old, right shot defenceman
6-foot-8, 220 pounds.
No PP, Yes PK
Tyler Myers defines resiliency. He was the whipping boy for fans and the media just four years ago during head coach Travis Green’s last partial season in Vancouver. That treatment had carried over from the previous campaign.
Gradually, he’s won back plenty of favour. The question is; will it last. It’s quite possible the 2024-’25 season and how it ended will be an augur of things to come for the mammoth blueliner from Texas.
In other words, is the inevitable decline poised to occur?
Statistically last season Myers pretty much put up the numbers one would expect. He matched his Vancouver high goal total of six, something he’s done twice before here, and his points (24) and penalty minutes (74) were pretty much right on his mark.
It may be the finer numbers that cause concern. His puck possession was pretty standard from what we’ve come to expect, but his giveaways were way up while his hits and blocked shots were down.
Were these just symptomatic of the Canucks lost season or are they signs that Myers is losing pace. While no one will ever doubt his commitment or work ethic, father time might be having a stronger say. The league’s not getting slower by any means.
The key could be his partnership with 29-year-old lefty Marcus Pettersson. The Swede brings a solid game to the table, and good size. Slighter, but 6-foot-5 and not afraid.
Myers will benefit.
He began his career with a Calder Trophy as rookie-of-the-year in 2010 with the Buffalo Sabres. Sixteen seasons later Myers will pass the 1,100 NHL game mark, barring serious injury. Will he still be effective and making an impact when he crosses that threshold? The Canucks need the answer to be yes.
