After a miraculous Kraken victory on Saturday night that saw the team score with two seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game in St. Louis, only to beat the Blues in overtime 4-3, Seattle dropped a low scoring affair in Dallas against the Stars on Sunday evening 2-1.
The split keeps the Kraken tied for 2nd place in the Pacific Division with 18 points. Technically they’re in 3rd place, as the 2nd place Vegas Golden Knights have played one less game than Seattle and have a higher win percentage.
Seattle’s win in St. Louis was monumental for a number of reasons. They twice came from behind to tie the game. Down two-nothing, defenseman Ryker Evans, in his first game of the season coming off an upper body injury, and Finnish sniper Eeli Tolvanen, ending a season-long goal drought, both scored in the 2nd period to even the match.
After the Blues retook the lead off a scramble in front of Kraken goalie Philipp Grubauer at the 5:10 mark of the third period, Chandler Stephenson waited until the final seconds to tie it with a blast through a screen with an extra attacker on the ice.
Shane Wright scored his first OT winner, cutting to the net at 1:57 of overtime and beating goalie Joel Hofer off the far post and in.
On night two, there would be no comeback against the Stars and goalie Casey DeSmith, who made 30 saves. In fact, the Kraken scored first; Jaden Schwartz with a tip-in at the 3:15 mark of the 1st period, ultimately Seattle’s only goal.
Wyatt Johnston and Tyler Sequin tallied for Dallas against Kraken goalie Matt Murray later in the first period for the final margin. Seattle fired lots of vulcanized rubber DeSmith’s way, including with a 5-on-3 advantage in the 2nd period, but couldn’t beat him again.
The Kraken are 7-4-and-4 on the season and return home to play the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.
